SHOPPERS in Barry’s Holton Road and High Street retail districts will see the introduction of measures to assist with social distancing amid the coronavirus crisis.

The action is being taken following the announcement, by Welsh Government first minister Mark Drakeford, that all non-essential shops in Wales will be able to re-open from Monday, June 22.

Retailers will be able to resume trading if they can take all reasonable measures to comply with the physical distancing duty in Welsh law to reduce the spread of coronavirus and protect shop workers and shoppers.

The Vale council has begun installing signs in the shopping streets.

Barry town centre councillor, Ian Johnson said: “Vale council officers have been in conversation with Holton Road Traders and with Barry Town Council about how shops can open safely and shoppers keep social distance.

“We understand that there’ll be one-way signs for pedestrians between Thompson Street and King Square, and as far as Court Road.

“Also, some of the car parking bays on Holton Road will be taken out of use to give people more space to pass.

“We hope that this will make people feel that Holton Road is a safe place to shop.”

The Vale council, on its Twitter account, said: “Over the coming days we'll be doing some things to make our town centres safe places to shop and visit.

"Please be patient look out for each other when visiting out high streets and resorts.

"Together we can keep our communities safe and our businesses open.”
