BARRY Coastguard and the Penarth Coastguard Rescue Team were called to the Old Harbour at 3.37pm following reports that people were using a dangerous area on Monday, June 1.

People have flocked to the area with Whitmore Bay, Barry Island, closed to vehicles and police stopping non-locals from visiting the area.

A Barry Coastguard spokesman said: “People have taken to using the sand slip to sunbathe and play games.

“This area also has a large amount of mud and can be very dangerous as it will completely cover at high tide.

“Our team gave safety advice and encouraged people to leave the area with Vale of Glamorgan police.

He added: “During this callout, youths were jumping off the harbour arm and a family were in the sea just off Knap point in a inflatable dinghy with only one oar.

“We ask the public to be extra careful at this time and follow all government guidelines.”
