FROM the Archive this week features a photograph of Miss Gabrielle Ray.

This promotional postcard, for theatre star Miss Gabrielle Ray cast in the role of "Frou Frou" in the comedy play "The Merry Widow", was sent from Barry in 1908.

The play was a sensation and ran for 778 performances in London and toured the country.

In 1909 the play arrived in Barry and was staged at the Theatre Royal.

The local paper, The Barry Dock News had an exclusive interview with the star, 20-year-old Miss Daphne Glenn who was understudy to Gabrielle Ray in the London show.

Miss Glenn was asked, if she liked Barry.

She responded that it seemed like "a nice town".

She said she was passionately fond of golf, had medals for swimming and took a wicket on the first ball she had ever bowled at cricket.

She went on to play leading roles in comedy plays in the USA in 1910.

The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the information.
