FROM the Archive this week features a photograph of the Barry Basin and Timber Sheds.

This postcard was sent on June 27, 1919 to Markham near Bristol.

The message on the reverse states: "I don't think the ship is sailing this week there's a big strike brewing here."

By the start of July 1919 Barry Dock boatmen and riggers were on strike and they demanded a 20 per cent increase in tariff rates.

A crowded meeting was held at St. Marys Hall Barry Dock, where the men agreed to go on strike.

However, dock work proceeded as usual as the channel pilots continued to berth vessels into the docks.

On July 11, 1919 the men returned to work following a mass meeting in Cardiff the night before.

There is no evidence to suggest their demands were met.

The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
