An Usk business has been named as a winner at this year’s Welsh Business Awards, held at City Hall in Cardiff.

Morris’s of Usk was announced as Family Business of the Year.

The garden centre compromises pet, home, and gift shopping, a restaurant, family farm, farm shop with onsite butcher and bakery, a café/pizzeria and a grounds maintenance business which is managed from the site.

Judges praised the business for its family values and ethos that they believed have continued through the family’s generations.

Judges were also impressed at how the family play to each member’s strengths, and believed they had a strong and sustainable model for the future.

The event saw business from across Wales come together to celebrate their achievement and success through 2019 across 10 categories.

In a joint statement Kate Morris, managing director, and Helen Morris, farm shop manager at Morris’s of Usk, said: “We are so thrilled to have been named Family Business of the Year, we can’t believe it.

“I know we were up against some other really strong businesses, so this is a massive achievement for us.

“We’re very lucky to have such a strong family network who all really care for the business and work so hard to see it succeed.

“We’re very happy and so proud to be taking home this award.”

The South Wales Chamber of Commerce welcomed minister for the economy, transport and North Wales Ken Skates AM to address guests at the event.

Mr Skates said: “The award winners tonight represent the best of Welsh business in 2020. We’ve seen some of the most innovative and cutting-edge companies growing their firms and reaching out into new and expanding markets.

“Importantly, it has been great to see so many of them doing it in a way that prepares for the future.

“It’s inspiring to see so many of the winners break new ground in areas such as decarbonisation, new technology and in building a more diverse workforce.”

The Welsh Business Awards organised by the South Wales Chamber of Commerce provide an important opportunity to highlight the best of the best of business across the nation.

Heather Myers, CEO of South Wales Chamber of Commerce said: “These awards celebrate the tenacity, ambition and determination to succeed.

“They celebrate teamwork, risk taking, overcoming failure and that Wales is a great place to do business.

“These awards celebrated business from across all regions of Wales and perfectly demonstrated the diversity of what Welsh industry makes, and the services it provides.

“The Chamber has just two mandates, to help Welsh businesses to grow, and to ensure the politicians and decision makers understand what they need to do to help that happen.

“The winners are amongst the best examples of how to grow a business in Wales and I know all the politicians and decision makers who attended are ready to engage and hear more. Well done to all our finalists and winners for flying the flag for Wales so magnificently.”
