FROM the Archive this week features a picture-postcard which was sent to Hamburg in Germany on June 23, 1908 with the message: "Just a corner of lovely Barry."

June 1908 was a very eventful time on the island as the Licensing Committee of Barry Urban District Council had appointed two new beach inspectors.

With 17 applications for the job, the short-list of four had to pass a selection process which included a test on swimming, boating, and lifesaving.

Mr Deacon, 26, of Clive Road, Barry Island and Mr Hobbs, 25, of Phyllis Street, Barry Island, were appointed.

It wasn't long before they were reporting people to the council for throwing stones, bad language, and bad boatmanship.

The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
