If you tell people NOT to panic buy then they will…by their very nature…panic buy.

I think next time no one in any position of authority should make any announcement that the food is not going to run out because we have amongst us all people who will always believe the opposite.

Much of this comes from our distrust of our leaders and the feeling that we aren’t being told the full truth about coronavirus.

We feel that in some way we know best and that by taking action, we are in our small way helping to change the outcome of something that is out of our control.

A rumour yesterday warned me that the halal meat supplies were running low and I had better stock up.

What I can’t understand is why we think by hoarding particular items we are in some way ‘safe?’ The fact is no amount of pasta, toilet roll and hand sanitizer is going to stop you getting this virus. If you are going to get it then you are going to get it.

You can use soap if need be it does the job just as well.

One has to feel for the people who wait in line and genuinely just need a few items and can't get these now.

I would suggest all those people who have gone out and bought all these pointless items, find the nearest elderly neighbour and hand it over to them. It is time we as a nation realise that we need to take care of elderly folk a lot more than we have been doing.

It is payback for all those times they took care of us. It is as simple as that.

The coming weeks are going to be difficult but it is not going to be anything we can’t handle. It is going to be more difficult for those whose jobs rely heavily on events and tourism and for those who are self-employed.

Whilst I have written on these very pages about the Prime Minister Boris being a little over the top in his comments, I have to admit I was taken in by his very British response to the crisis.

What many people are not willing to accept is that the science must guide the decision and not emotions. We want more to be done but then don’t exactly know what that is.

Regardless of what we might we say, the headline to this column will be largely ignored because we have a wider media who are coronavirus crazy and a population who want desperately to be saved from the impending doom.
