SCHOOLS in Barry, Rhoose, St Athan, Sully, and Wenvoe have received their latest banding results.

The bandings, released on Friday, January 31, rate the performance of schools in Wales according to a colour-coded system which ranges from green through to yellow, amber, and red.

The National School Categorisation System, introduced in 2014, is designed to evaluate the level of support appropriate to each school to help them improve.

Across the country, the percentage of primary and secondary schools in the green category has risen from 41.6 per cent last year to 46.9 per cent this year.

Barry Island Primary School, Colcot Primary School, High Street Primary School, Palmerston Primary School, Sully Primary School, and St Athan Primary School were all rated green.

Also receiving the top green banding were Ysgol Gymraeg Sant Baruc, Ysgol Gymraeg Sant Curig, Ysgol Gymraeg Gwaun y Nant, Cadoxton Primary School, Romilly Primary School, Gwenfo C/W Primary School, and Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg.

Receiving a yellow banding were Gladstone Primary School, Holton Primary School, Jenner Park Primary School, Rhws County Primary School, All Saints C/W Primary School, and

St Helen's Catholic Primary School.

Oak Field Primary and Nursery School was given an amber banding.

Welsh Government education minister, Kirsty Williams, said: ”I remain committed to building a collaborative, self-improving school system throughout Wales.

“Despite the improvements, I remain concerned about those schools, particularly the proportion in the secondary sector, which continue to require the highest levels of support.

“The figures published today show that 13.5 per cent of our schools are in the amber and red support categories.

“We are therefore trialling a multi-agency approach with a small number of secondary schools.

“This approach will mean that once local authorities and regions have identified those schools that need the most support, they are able to draw on the considerable expertise and resources that exist across our middle tier.”
