SECOND-HALF goals from Jamille Matt and Padraig Amond saw Newport County AFC fight back from a goal down to win at Scunthorpe United. Here are the talking points...

Finally! Three points for the Exiles

After 84 days, County can at last celebrate a victory in League Two after they finally ended their 10-game winless streak in the league.

The sense of relief and joy at the final whistle was evident as the players and manager Michael Flynn headed straight for the away fans to celebrate the win that lifts them to 11th in the table.

And there was a pleasing sense of symmetry that the wretched run was ended against Scunthorpe, who were the last team County beat in the league – at Rodney Parade way back on October 19. Sadly, they can’t play the Iron every week.

Overnight-stay hoodoo is over too

The 10-game winless run now becomes a three-match unbeaten run in the league and County also got another monkey off their back at Glanford Park.

Flynn spoke beforehand about his side not having won a match that has involved an overnight stay since the 1-0 victory at Tranmere Rovers in September 2018.

But, after defeats at Colchester United (twice), Bradford City, Morecambe, Millwall, Carlisle United, Lincoln City and Grimsby Town and draws at Grimsby, Middlesbrough and Morecambe, they finally enjoyed that winning feeling on the long journey home.

Character and desire not in doubt

Flynn and his players answered the critics who have questioned their attitude and commitment by turning the match on its head in the second half, much like Morecambe did to them just before Christmas.

The manager has criticised the poor decisions and individual errors that his players have made in recent months, but he’s always maintained that their effort and endeavour are never in doubt.

And anyone who saw the scenes of celebration with the travelling fans after the final whistle yesterday will have seen how much it means to Flynn and his players and the togetherness there is within the squad.

South Wales Argus:

Strikers finding the net

County scored two goals in a league game for the first time since their last win in October and it was enough to earn the three point.

And another big positive was the identity of the scorers as front men Matt and Amond were both on target after Amond and Tristan Abrahams both scored in midweek against MK Dons.

Amond is now on 12 for the season in all competitions, Abrahams 10 and Matt four. The goal for Matt was much-needed and with all three suddenly taking their chances, it bodes well for the second half of the season.
