FROM the Archive this week features a photograph of Alexandra Gardens, in Barry in the 1920s.

The photograph shows a very smart seaside town park with clipped green lawns, clearly defined paths, and flower displays, and a smart partly white washed outer stone wall.

Alexandra Gardens also boasts some sporting links.

In 1928, Glamorgan County Council refused to provide hard tennis courts at Barry Training College and an application was made for the use of the tennis courts in Alexander Gardens, five days a week by students.

Barry Rugby Football Club also used Alexandra Gardens as one of its rugby pitches in its early years.

The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
