A £34.7million new build for Pencoedtre High School, in Barry, has been granted planning permission.

This project is part of the Vale council and Welsh Government 21st century schools investment programme which will also deliver a new building for Whitmore High School and an expansion for Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg, among other projects in the Vale.

Permission was granted on Wednesday, December 11.

Work is scheduled to start on site in spring 2020 and will include a three-storey modern school building, performance spaces and excellent sporting facilities including a four court sports hall, all-weather hockey floodlit pitch, four games courts and grassed football and rugby pitches and.

Bouygues Construction UK have been appointed to build the new school on the existing school site.

The project timetable will see staff and pupils move in to the new building in October 2021 with the project completed in July 2022.

Head of strategy, community learning and resources, Trevor Baker said: “I’m delighted to see this project progressing to the next stage.

"This programme of work will see over £30m invested in developing a bespoke, brand new school building fit for 21st century learning which will benefit pupils, staff and the wider community.”
