VOTING in the UK general election is underway and Vale of Glamorgan residents have been selecting who will be the next MP.

Polling stations opened at 7am, on Thursday, December 12, and will close at 10pm – after which the ballot boxes will be delivered to Barry Leisure Centre where the count will take place.

The result is expected in the early hours of the morning on Friday, December 13.

A polling card is not necessary to vote - you just need to be on the electoral register.

At the polling station in Beryl Road, Barry, there was a steady stream of people arriving to decide who will represent them in the Vale.

Mark Rees, 49, said: “It’s a big general election this – it depends whether we get Brexit done or not doesn’t it?

“The older generation may not come out in this wet weather because it will be too cold for them.

“Bring your umbrellas.”

Retired pump dock man Graham Hollinshead, 82, said: “I’ve always voted.

“It’s important to vote more so now. You reap what you sew.”

Alessandro Sandonato, 27, said: “Vote for change. I think the town mainly needs a change. The town mostly is definitely in need of change.”

Gabrielle Sandonato, 25, added: “Just don’t complain about the government if you are not going to do anything about it and vote. Get out and do something.”

The four candidates, in alphabetical order, are:

Alun Cairns (Conservative)

Belinda Loveluck-Edwards (Labour)

Anthony Slaughter (Green)

Laurence Williams (Gwlad Gwlad)
