A SPORTS-MAD family from Barry Island has been awarded three Blue Peter badges.

Danny Mickelsen, 13, and his sister Grace, 11, together with their younger brother Scott, eight, are already active in their family's main sport of tennis with mum Penny, a tennis coach, and Danny being the 8u Welsh Junior champion in 2014.

But to receive a Blue Peter Sports Badge the St Richard Gwyn RC secondary school and Barry Island Primary School pupils each had to try a new sport.

Scott chose to continue the family racquet sport theme and booked a court a Barry Leisure centre to try out squash for the first time, which he really enjoyed along with dad Gary.

Dan chose to put his natural enthusiasm for running and climbing to the test by tackling a free-running session, and Grace took advantage of the opportunity to try a new sport when she started secondary school and joined in girls' rugby training.

The siblings are now hoping to earn a Blue Peter Music badge by trying out new instruments.

Dan has already started trying out drums, while he and Grace are also taking part in the school's brass group, and Scott has asked Santa for a saxophone.
