FROM the Archive this week features an old photograph of Tynewydd Road, in Barry.
The Protestant Truth Society was founded by John Kensit in 1889 to protest against the influence of Roman Catholicism in the Church of England.
In 1898 the society sent out "Wickliffe Preachers" to spread the word.
The preachers came to Barry in November 1907 and on a Monday evening they addressed a large crowd in the open air at the corner of Tynewydd Road.
The meeting did not quite go to plan when preachers were interrupted and pelted with eggs by a group of small boys.
This didn't put the preachers off and they returned to preach to Barry in the following years
The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
