THREE public houses in Barry are set for an affordable homes transformation, following a public consultation.

Newydd Housing Association is proposing the regeneration and re-use of The Castle Hotel, Jewel Street, The Sea View Labour Club, Dock View Road, and The Windsor, Holton Road, all in Barry.

The proposal is to seek full planning permission for the refurbishment, extension and change of use of the properties to include the retention of the public house and community facilities at The Castle Hotel and the provision of a total of 60 affordable apartments across the three sites.

The Castle Hotel will provide 12 one-bedroom apartments and two two-bedroom apartments for affordable rent.

The Seaview Labour Club will provide 20 one-bedroom apartments, three of these will be fully adapted, as well as eight two-bedroom apartments for affordable rent.

The Windsor Hotel will provide 12 one-bedroom apartments, two of these will be fully adapted, as well as six two-bedroom apartments for affordable rent.

More than 40 people attended the consultation event in the Castleland Community Centre, on Tuesday, September 3.

From the feedback forms received at the event, 88 per cent were supportive of the scheme with 12 per cent unsure.

None of the residents attending were opposed to the scheme.

These responses will now be included in Newydd’s planning application which will be submitted to the Vale council in a few weeks time.

If local residents were unable to attend the consultation event, there will be another consultation period once the planning application has been registered with Vale planners.

Chief executive of Newydd Housing Association, Paul Roberts said: “Following the consultation event on Tuesday we are now analysing the responses and working with our planning consultants Avison Young to ensure that our application takes into account the views of local residents.

“We value the opinion of local people and would like to thank them for attending.”
