YSGOL Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg (YGBM) is celebrating an unprecedented level of success at the Urdd National Eisteddfod, in Cardiff Bay.

The week-long festival, celebrating Welsh language and culture, saw YGBM pupils win 20 medals in the singing, acting, creative writing, art, music, mathematics, and hairdressing, categories.

And former pupil Brennig Davies won The Crown, the main literary prize for prose.

He is now a first-year student at Oxford University where he is reading English.

He said: “I was inspired to compete for The Crown this year by the encouragement the Welsh Department at Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Morgannwg had given me, especially Miss Heledd Lewis and it is a huge privilege to win The Crown.

“Another boost was winning the Year 12 and 13 Prose competition at the Urdd Eisteddfod last year, and feeling that I wanted to stick to my Welsh roots even though I now live half the year in England.”

YGBM head teacher, Hywel Price said: “YGBM is very proud of all our pupils that took part in the Urdd National Eisteddfod from the opening ceremonies, helping behind the scenes, preliminary rounds and on the national stage.

“The Eisteddfod is a wonderful opportunity for students to express their many talents and this was certainly shown in the medals won across a wide range of competitions.

“The medals are only the tip of the ice berg as we encourage everyone to take part and this year we had a good percentage of our students compete.

“To see our former pupil Brennig Davies crowned for his literary skills was the highlight of a very successful week.”
