WALES’ only Gaming Van Company has arrived - and it’s decided its first stop is Barry.

Simon Paterson, 48, of Barry Waterfront and his son and teenage business partner, Charlie, 14, have parked their mobile games service in the town.

Mr Paterson worked in IT for 25 years looking after Barry College and then primary schools across Newport and Monmouthshire.

He left in October 2018 to pursue Gaming Squad.

Gaming Squad, based in Barry, so far comprises of one van.

The biggest van of its type, it has an extra-long wheelbase, an extra high roof, and full vinyl wrap.

“It's a real head turner and gets noticed wherever it goes,” Mr Paterson said. “It is a huge van that has been converted into a dedicated mobile gaming theatre.

“It contains the latest games consoles, wall to wall 4K TV's, and the best multi-player games.

“Two-tiered stadium style seating accommodates up to 16 players at a time.

“Our focus is on multi-player gaming and bringing the joy of couch gaming back.

“Teaming up with your friends or competing against them is so much more fun when you're in the same environment.

“Even better when in an atmospheric dedicated gaming station like the Gaming Squad van.”

The idea originated in the USA where there are now more than 400 vans operating.

It arrived in London in 2008 and there are now multiple companies operating right across UK and Ireland.

“We are the first and remain the only gaming van company in Wales,” Mr Paterson said.

“I went to a franchise fair at the NEC Birmingham looking for inspiration\something to invest in and buried amongst stall after stall was one of these beautiful gaming vans.

“It was a sight to behold and love at first sight.

“I knew I wanted to invest.

“Unfortunately, I felt it was too expensive so after much thought I decided to do it myself.

“I had no direct experience of gaming vans.

“I did have years of experience of working with children in my role of IT support looking after primary schools across South Wales.

“I was also an avid gamer so when this opportunity came along I knew it was the perfect match for me.”

Online reviews have been good.

“Parents love the convenience of us coming to them,” Mr Paterson said. “They love the security of their loved-ones partying outside whilst they relax inside.

“The kids love gaming with their friends rather than gaming online.

“The van is a a real head turner and never fails to get the neighbours out to have a look at what is going on.”

The immediate plan is to get Gaming Squad recognised as a party provider within the South Wales party scene.

The main market is birthday parties, but the duo also want to get involved with wedding entertainment and corporate team building.

Mr Paterson added: “Eventually, we aim to have multiple vans operating across the South Wales region.

“Beyond that who knows.”
