FROM the Archive this week features an image of pebbly beach and viaduct at Porthkerry Country Park in Barry.
In 1906 Barry councillor James Jones was proposing ambitious plans to develop Porthkerry Park and pebble beach.
He wanted to use the Park to construct a salt water lake in order to turn Barry into a health resort, but the council first needed to purchase the 70 acres of land from the Romilly Estate.
Salt water bathing is still considered by some to help circulation and hydrate your skin.
The land was purchased, but the idea of the salt water lakes was dropped soon after the initial suggestion, most probably because the Romilly Estate wanted £75 per acre.
The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
