FROM the Archive this week features an aerial photograph of the Glamorgan Training College.

The college first opened in 1914 and over the years various expansions were made.

Miss Raw was the first women's headmistress and in 1914 on the opening of the college she found herself in conflict with local ministers.

She had advised female students not to attend religious services in Barry Dock and to avoid the Buttrills Road after dark as it was frequented by undesirable characters.

In protest at the college advice to female students three ministers Revs. Ben Evans, J. Mydyr Evans and Howell Davies met with the headmistress to demand answers.

Miss Raw did not back down on the advice she had given to parents and students.

The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
