RETAIL giant Waitrose has confirmed it is set to close its Barry store on Sunday, June 9.

Store bosses have confirmed that it has exchanged contracts to sell its Palmerston Road store to Anlo Properties, which, a spokesman said: “regrettably means we will close.”

Anlo Properties have informed Waitrose that they will be undertaking works to the unit for an extended period of time with plans likely to be shared at a later date.

A Waitrose spokesman said: “We will be meeting with our 122 Partners who work at the store to ensure they are fully supported and will identify suitable opportunities for those wishing to remain with the business wherever possible.”

Waitrose & Partners regional manager, Alistair Bullock said: “We have taken great pride in being part of the Barry community for almost 15 years so the sale of the shop is not something we take lightly, but we have sadly not been able to find a way to make the shop commercially sustainable in the long-term.

“Our priority is our Partners working there who will be fully supported throughout the process and we will identify opportunities for those wishing to remain with the business wherever possible.”

Vale AM Jane Hutt AM has expressed dismay at the news that Waitrose will now close in June following assurances she received in January that Waitrose would not be closing despite rumours at the time.

Ms Hutt said: “I have called for a meeting with Waitrose to discuss the closure in support of the staff who have served the community so brilliantly for so many years.”

The store was previously home to a Safeway.

In June 2017 Vale planners threw out proposals for discount store, Aldi to base itself in the Ty Verlon Industrial Estate, in Cardiff Road, Barry.

A B&M Express is scheduled to open in the former New Look store, in Holton Road, on Thursday, March 21.
