PLANS for a new business and entertainment village at Barry Waterfront are set to be given the go-ahead this week.

Vale of Glamorgan Council officers have recommended that plans to transform the Goods Shed in Hood Road be approved when the planning committee meets on Thursday, February 28.

The historic 1880s railway shed could be turned into a space for 11 units, a restaurant and a technology hub or community workshop.

A ‘shipping container village’ of up to 68 units would be set up to accommodate local businesses such as bars, restaurants, shops and other leisure uses.

An events space, outdoor cinema, a farmers’ market or pop-up street food area, a drive-thru coffee shop and a children’s playground are also included in the plans by developer DS Properties.

The developer also wants to build a five-storey apartment block made up of 23 affordable and 19 open market flats on land east of the Goods Shed.

A total of 52 parking spaces would serve the two developments.

If councillors approve the plans they would form the latest phase of the Innovation Quarter at Barry Waterfront, a regeneration joint venture between the Vale of Glamorgan Council and the Welsh Government.

Barry Town Council's planning committee has expressed strong reservations regarding the proposed development and the lack of off-street parking provision for residents and visitors.
