THIS week’s From the Archive features a photograph from inside the Castle Hotel, Jewell Street, in Barry in the early 1900s.
In 1911 Charles Henry Farmer was living in the Castle Hotel, Barry.
His mother Sophia was running the Castle Hotel having been recently widowed.
Also living in the hotel was his two brothers, three barmaids, and a barman.
Aged 20, Charles was a self-employed photographer running his own business in Dock View Road.
This photograph taken by Charles is probably his own bedroom at the Castle Hotel.
The lack of plumbing, heating and the numerous photographs point to this space being his bolt hole in a busy hotel where space was a premium.
In 1916 Charles enlisted for the Royal Flying Corps.
He served the duration of the First World War as a government photographer.
After the war Charles continued with his photography business moving to 61, Holton Road.
The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
