A BARRY head teacher has spoken of his excitement after it was revealed his school could be completely rebuilt.

Pencoedtre High School, formerly the all-girl Bryn Hafren Comprehensive, was previously earmarked for a £10 million refurbishment scheme.

But plans to instead completely rebuild the Merthyr Dyfan Road school, as well as St Nicholas Church in Wales School, could be given the green light by the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s cabinet on Monday, January 7.

It has been revealed the school is eligible for extra funding as part of the council’s £144 million 21st Century Schools programme.

Whitmore High School, formerly the all-boys Barry Comprehensive in Port Road, has already had more than £30 million funding for a new build on the same site.

Head teacher Tyrone Davies said

he had recently noticed how “tired” the school building was looking and a new build would save money, in the long run.

“It’s going to make the east of Barry equal to the west of Barry and we are very excited about that,” he said.

“The staff are happy and it’s going to be great for our pupils and their families.”

He said the school, would have greater scope for community use such as the provision of allotments, an environmental garden and covered play areas.

Vale council cabinet member for learning and culture, Cllr Bob Penrose said: “This increased funding should allow us to further expand what was already a far-reaching programme of investment aimed at transforming nursery, primary, secondary and faith education across the Vale. The 21st Century Schools investment programme will make a significant difference to the educational experience of children throughout the county.

“Extensive improvements have already been made to a host of school buildings and that is set to continue on an even greater scale.”

If the plans are given the go-ahead building work is expected to begin in 2021.
