THIS week’s From the Archive features a photograph of American troops outside the town hall, in King Square, Barry, in 1918.
A large liner carrying American troops arrived in Barry Dock in the morning on Wednesday, July 31.
The 1,500 troops on board the ship were part of a contingent of some 50,000 American forces destined to join the Western Front.
Colonel E. G. Mortimer commanded the American Troops and on arrival in the town the troops marched to King Square.
They were welcomed by Colonel Bainbridge of the Lancashire Fusiliers and the chairman of Barry Urban District Council George Wareham JP.
A crowd of at least 5,000 Barrians welcomed the American troops and the town was bedecked with bunting.
The troops left Barry, by train, that afternoon for Cardiff.
