THIS week’s From the Archive features a photograph of the interior of St Helen’s Roman Catholic Church around 1915.
St Helen’s Church was officially opened in 1907.
This photograph shows the original layout of the interior of the church.
On either side of the high altar are the confessional boxes.
The names of the priests who hear confession are above them.
Father Louis Mooney is on the left and Father Francis Vaughan on the right.
In September 1918 Rev Mooney left St Helen’s Church for France.
He was appointed a military chaplain and he remained in France until 1922.
Rev Francis Vaughan later became a bishop of the diocese of Menevia, in Swansea.
The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
