A CEREMONY commemorating Merchant Navy Day was held at the Civic Offices, in Holton Road, Barry, at 10am on Friday, August 31.

Former Services personnel and public gathered at the Merchant Navy Monument to take part in, and witness, the proceedings remembering the fallen.

Vale MP Alun Cairns and Vale AM Jane Hutt laid wreaths as did senior councillors.

There were readings from Barry Merchant Navy Association (MNA) chairman Joe Norton and MNA member Peter Rees.

The Rev Chris Seaton officiated as the honorary chaplain to the Barry Branch of the Merchant Navy Association and Vale mayor, Cllr Leighton Rowlands, introduced the ceremony and led the act of Remembrance.

The exhortation was led by Joe Norton MNA and Ross Cleland MN.
