THIS week’s From The Archive features a photograph of The Parade in Barry.

In 1893 a decision was made to extend the sewers in Barry to Cold Knap making considerable improvements and enlargement to the system.

Up until then the sewers emptied into Barry Harbour and it was particularly unpleasant for the public to stroll around the harbour.

The new 1893 sewers started from Island Road and went down past the Ship Inn and up The Parade to Cold Knap.

Unfortunately, the locals living in The Parade had not anticipated part of the works would involve blasting.

In November 1893 houses on The Parade were damaged both inside and outside by the blasting for the new sewers.

Mr Johnson who lived in Number 7 (the seventh house from the right) got so fed up he took the contractors for the council to court and in 1896 was awarded £29 10s 5d compensation.

The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
