THIS week the nostalgia section features a photograph of the Barry Business School from around 1907.

On the corner of Broad Street and Island Road, the Barry Business School offered secondary education for boys from when it opened in April 1907.

The enterprise was established by Mr RA Lewis, who had previously worked as a teacher for 21 years at the Pill Street School in Penarth; now Cogan Primary.

He was also a double gold and silver medal winner at the Eisteddfod for music and literature as well as writing a prize-work on the Life of General Gordon a famous British army officer who had died in Khartoum in 1885.

The Barry Business School offered individual attention for students, private coaching for examinations, training in languages, shorthand, and typewriting.

By 1908 the school was renamed Barry Secondary and Commercial school accepting both boys and girls.

The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
