AN ADVENTURER who helped raise more than £112,000 for Marie Curie by trekking through Sri Lanka last November has shared her experiences, as the terminal illness charity plans their next expedition to Vietnam.

The fundraising team at Marie Curie are calling on volunteers to conquer their fears and take on new challenges by signing up to the Vietnam trek, which takes place in October 2019.

One of the two-dozen trekkers who took on the Sri Lanka challenge was Jet Ward-Henry, whose father Marc Henry died at the charity's Penarth hospice last July.

She said the climb to the top of Adam’s Peak allowed her to conquer her fear of heights.

“I felt sick the entire duration but I felt the fear and did it to support a fabulous and extremely worthy charity that is very close to my heart,” said the 23-year-old.

Nerys Thomas, a member of the Penarth and District Fundraising Group for Marie Curie, celebrated her 70th birthday by taking on the Sri Lanka trek – a decade after celebrating her 60th by signing up to her first.

Together, the group managed to raise £120,634 for the hospice.

The Vietnam trek will raise funds for the Marie Curie Nursing Service across Wales, including both home and hospice care.

Last year, Marie Curie Nurses cared for more than 3,000 patients and their families across Wales, at an annual cost of more than £8 million.

Community fundraiser Hannah Leckie said: “Our treks are always very popular, whether it’s with people looking to take on a new challenge in a beautiful country with stunning landscapes, or those whose family has been cared for at the hospice and want to give something back.

“We hope the Vietnam trek will be one of the best treks yet – offering all those taking part the adventure of a lifetime while raising money for an important local cause.”

Marie Curie will be hosting an information evening at the day therapy unit in the Cardiff and the Vale Hospice on Bridgeman Road, Penarth, on Tuesday, March 20 at 6.30pm, to give prospective trekkers the opportunity to learn more about next year’s fundraising quest.
