WELSH-language school Ysgol Bro Morgannwg is celebrating another excellent set of A-Level results, with all pupils achieving at least two A-Levels between grades A*-E and overall grades remaining well above the national average.

The proportion of grades awarded either an A or an A* increased slightly on last year, rising to 27.3 per cent. The average across Wales rose to 25 per cent.

There had been concern amongst teachers over the changing format of the exams that had taken place this year, but results seemed largely unaffected by the changes.

In total, 92 per cent of pupils achieved three or more pass grades at A*-E.

Caleb Darwin, 18, achieved 2A* grades and 2As and is going to specialise in Politics at Trinity College, Cambridge, in September.

"I studied History, Geography, Maths and the Welsh Baccalaureate," he said.

"I certainly didn't expect to get two A*s, I was just hoping I was going to get the grades I needed to get in to Cambridge.

"I got the email saying I'd got in this morning, so that took a bit of the anxiety out of it. There were a few tears in the house this morning."

Elen Dafydd, also 18, managed a clean sweep as she achieved A*s in all four of her subjects - Maths, Further Maths, Economics and the Welsh Baccalaureate. She is going to study at the London School of Economics.

"It's not what I was expecting at all, especially Further Maths, as it was really hard this year," she said.

"I was so surprised, I just can't wait to celebrate now!"

Lois Aled, 18, who came away with an amazing six A-Levels in total, said she was just happy to have got the grades she needed, but admitted she was delighted to achieve such an incredible feat.

"The main thing is getting into university, but it's a huge bonus. I really wasn't expecting it!

"When I turned up to school this morning and saw my grades, it was just a massive relief. I felt so happy!"

Miss Aled will be going to study Medicine at Bristol University next month.

One student taking a slightly different route to his peers is Harri Roberts, 18, who has been offered a place at the New York Academy for Dramatic Arts.

He has deferred his offer for a year to raise money to travel out to the United States, but was delighted to get the grades he needed to confirm his place.

"I did really well this year, as opposed to last year," he said.

"There were a few things that could have gone differently, but overall I'm really pleased.

"I got a Distinction in Music, a B in English, a B in Drama and a Distinction in the Welsh Baccalaureate.

"Because of money it's just easier for me to go next year. Last Saturday I had my first fundraiser, which was a concert with a few of my friends, so hopefully some more of those will be happening over the course of this year."

Head teacher Hywel Price congratulated his students on their results, praising a number of the excellent grades that had been achieved.

"I wish to congratulate in particular Elen Dafydd for gaining 4A*grades thus gaining entry to the London School of Economics," he said.

"We are also delighted to have two students this year who have been successful in their applications to Oxford and Cambridge Universities - Nia Fenn and Caleb Darwin.

"Congratulations to all the pupils and staff and we wish all pupils every success in the future."
