The Leader of the Welsh Conservatives has called on the UK government to guarantee that Wales will not lose out financially after Brexit.

Marking one year on from the UK's momentous decision to leave the European Union, Andrew RT Davies has penned an article for pro-Leave website, Brexit Central, requesting confirmation that "Wales will not lose a single pound as a result of Brexit."

He also said that Barry could be one of the main places to benefit following the UK's withdrawal, arguing the 'shared prosperity fund' promised by the Conservative government would help spread the country's wealth more evenly.

Offering an olive branch to those he referred to as the "Hard Remainers," Mr Davies called on both sides to work together to make Brexit a success.

"It’s time to lay down your weapons," said Mr Davies.

"It’s time to get on with the job of shaping the landscape that we will inherit once we have left the European Union. It may be difficult to accept the outcome of the referendum, but we need to work together now to forge the regeneration, farming and research schemes that will follow our departure from the EU."

Mr Davies, a prominent 'Vote Leave' campaigner during the referendum, said it was important the devolved nations were a key consideration in negotiations.

The government should retain "a steely determination to get a good deal not just for the UK as a whole, but each of its constituent parts," he said.

Drawing parallels with the Vote Leave campaign, which Mr Davies said was about representing those who felt neglected by the elite, he said that it was "vital that we have the structures in place to ensure that people in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland have a bigger stake in the process. That means a better voice for the devolved nations."

"Places like Barry and Wrexham will now be able to benefit from the UK Government’s ‘Shared Prosperity Fund’, just as Welsh farmers will soon benefit from a locally driven replacement to a CAP which doesn’t fit.

"It’s a victory for democracy, and I hope that we can all now unite and work together – on all sides – to deliver on the collective will of the people."
