THIS week the nostalgia section features Barry’s town hall and library, in King Square, with flowerbeds and fountains prior to its last refurbishment.
The Tynewydd Road and Maes-y-cwm Quarry junction was once a vacant area so it was decided that a use should be found.
An architectural competition was held in 1903 and the successful architects were named as C.E. Hutchinson and E. Harding Payne, of London.
The Square is slightly elevated and south-facing.
The first part of the building to be built was the library, with the aid of the Carnegie Fund.
The second phase was the town hall which linked up to the library with a centrally-located clock tower.
The neo-Baroque design features stone-faced rustication, window mouldings and cornices and red brick infill.
The later phase of the town hall was never built and the rear elevation remains unfinished.
The remainder of the central quarry became what is known as Central Park.
