A BARRY kebab house has been nominated as one of the best in Wales.

A contest recognising the kebab industry’s contribution to the British economy has put Broad Street's Izmir Turkish & Greek Restaurant up for a best in Wales title.

The restaurant is up against 10 other outlets all aiming to be crowned Best Kebab House in Wales.

The winner will be announced at the fifth annual British Kebab Awards ceremony in London on Saturday, February 26

Members of the public were invited to nominate their favourite kebab shops.

The shortlist was based on the number of public votes received, hygiene scores with bonus points for nominations from MPs expected to attend by the dozen on the big night.

The Izmir Turkish & Greek Restaurant which has been open for four years, also offers many vegetarian choices and hosts belly-dancing.

Restaurant frontman, Ali Deveci, said: “I feel very good about it, but I can’t even get to the ceremony. We’ve got bookings.

"We always feel we are the best, but then we had the call from London.”

The judges include shadow economic secretary Jonathan Reynolds and fellow MP Nadhim Zahawi.

The number of #BritishKebabAwards tweets of support that a contender gets between now and the awards will also be taken into account.

The British Kebab Awards was established by the Centre for Turkey Studies (CEFTUS) and its founder Ibrahim Dogus in 2013.

British Kebab Awards creator Ibrahim Dogus said: “It’s set to be bigger and better than ever.

“Year on year we see fiercer contests between the best kebab chefs in the country all battling to be crowned kebab kings and there’s no shortage of people wanting to judge for themselves, Brits just can’t get enough of kebabs.”

The kebab industry is worth more than £2.8billion a year, to the British economy, supporting around 200,000 jobs across restaurants, suppliers and the food industry.

Every day 1.3m kebabs are sold across Britain.
