WORK has began to provide more than 30 new car parking bays in Barry town.

A total of 36 new car parking spaces will be built around High Street in the town, in addition to new road crossings for pedestrians to help improve safety in the busy area.

The works - which started last week and is planned to be completed in late November - will see an additional 26 spaces across York Place, High Street and Queen Street, with the remaining 10 spaces being created on Broad Street and Broad Street Parade in 2017.

Businesses and residents on Broad Street and Broad Street Parade will be sent information about phase two of the plan towards the end of the month.

Councillor Peter King, cabinet member for building services, highways and transportation, said: "The work being done around High Street should be hugely beneficial for motorists and pedestrians alike.

"Not only will there be more car parking provision in what is a busy shopping area, but new crossing points will ensure pedestrians are safer.

"They will also be more convenient for those on mobility scooters and the visually impaired."
