BARRY Comprehensive school could be set for a complete rebuild as part of a proposed multi-million pound overhaul of secondary education in Barry.

The Barry & District News understands that a proposal due to go before the Vale council next month draws up plans to rebuild Barry Comprehensive school in a £30m project, with tens of millions also being invested in refurbishing Ysgol Bro Morgannwg and Bryn Hafren Comprehensive.

The plans also seek to make both Barry Comprehensive and Bryn Hafren mixed-sex schools.

The cash windfall - expected to be granted by the Welsh Government and Vale Council - has yet to be rubber-stamped, but Barry Comprehensive pupils have already been asked to advise contractors on temporarily improving the facilities at the existing school and for ideas on how the new school should look.

Barry Comprehensive school head teacher Gerard McNamara said the new school, which would replace the current deteriorating building, would be gladly welcomed by both staff and pupils.

“It will be fantastic," Mr McNamara said. "It’s what the children of Barry deserve. We have seen what success new builds have had.

"I am delighted that the local authority are liaising with all the stakeholders in an exciting transformation of secondary education in Barry.

"The views of students, parents and teachers are helping the local authority shape an education that will guarantee high standards and excellent outcomes for all learners."

Both Bryn Hafren comprehensive and Ysgol Bro Morgannwg are also expected to see significant funding allocated for refurbishment works.

It was revealed earlier this month that the council are also seeking to expand Ysgol Bro Morgannwg by an extra 299 places to meet an increasing demand for Welsh Medium education in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The proposal form part of the Vale council's reconsidered new design for secondary education in Barry, following the scrapping of plans for a £35m mixed-sex super school.

The plans were dropped following opposition from parents, teachers and pupils during a consultation carried out in 2015.

Although they were unable to confirm the exact details of the upcoming proposals a Vale council spokesman explained that "exciting and ambitious" plans were in the pipeline for schools across Barry.

“We anticipate that the council’s cabinet will consider a report next month about the future of Barry Comprehensive and Bryn Hafren comprehensive schools, setting out exciting and ambitious plans for the future," the spokesman added.

"There has been extensive recent engagement with pupils, staff, parents and governors to develop detailed proposals.”

The report is expected to include investment plans and a recommendation that formal consultation gets underway in September.

The Welsh Government did not wish to comment.
