TENANTS have now moved into Newydd housing association’s £3.2 million housing development on Gileston Road in St Athan.

The Old Station 23-home development consists of one, two and three bedroom apartments, bungalows and houses, all built to level three of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

Jo-Ann Warren moved in with her children last week.

She said: “I have been waiting a long time for an adapted home. My 14 year old son has autism and needs extra help for tasks such as going up the stairs. I’ve suffered with back problems in the past which have deteriorated as a result, but this home has the facilities to allow us all to live more independently. Our new home will make the world of difference to us all in many different ways.”

Built on a brownfield site by contractors Jehu Project Services on behalf of Newydd and in partnership with Vale council, this housing development offers affordable homes for rent to local people having received part funding from the Welsh Government.

Chief executive of Newydd, Paul Roberts said, “We are so happy with the end result, this housing development is so pleasing on the eye and really does suit the rural area. High demand for these properties shows the need for affordable homes across rural Vale of Glamorgan and unfortunately some people have been left disappointed. We look forward to providing more options for local people in the coming months with the completion of a housing development at the site of the former sorting office in Llantwit Major soon.”

As part of the St Athan development, a £46,000 sustainable transport contribution has been made for footway, crossing and bus stop enhancements to the immediate area. The development also incorporates a public open space area.
