THIS week, Penarth Bowling Club continued their very successful 2015 campaign with another first-class performance in the PG2 competition and a wonderful run of success for the Ladies

The Alliance put in a fighting performance at Rhiwbina on Tuesday and won a close fought match by three shots.

Top rink for Penarth was the rink comprising Dave Plank, Alan Stockham, Russell Daniel and Reg Jones, making a very welcome return to the ranks. With Dave Hilldrup also winning, success was assured. There was a different outcome on Thursday however, when captain Russell Daniel faced a strong Barry Romilly team in Romilly Park. Despite a narrow defeat for Mike Conway and a dogged draw from Dave Hilldrup, there was some debate as to whether the other two rinks actually finished second on this occasion.

Saturday saw yet another splendid performance from the PG 2 side under captain Mike England, with a magnificent winning margin of 35 shots against Cardiff Athletic. There is a lot of experience in this side and it showed its worth, particularly in the performances of the Bob Hill and Ron Maggs, rinks who both recorded emphatic wins. Bob took top honours with excellent support from Roger Gidman, “Monsieur” John Whitfield and Russell Daniel. With Peter Small battling to a draw, the issue was never in doubt as the PG2 side continue to prosper.

Saturday also saw a Penarth side visit old friends and rivals as they visited the Murch Bowling club. This was a close run thing but, despite a great effort from the redoubtable Clive Fry, with the help of Phil Davies, Brian Knight and Ron Birkby, the Murch won through on the other three rinks to record a five-shot success in a very pleasantly contested match.

Meanwhile, the past fortnight has proved to be a busy and very successful one for Penarth Ladies, who are enjoying one of their best seasons for some time with some great bowling. Monday, 11th, saw the conclusion of the rain-affected Double Rink game against Windsor. This proved to be a nail-biting affair with Val Letton’s rink five shots to the good and Kath Jenkins holding her nerve to secure the one-shot win with her very last wood.

“Not the best of nights” was captain Lorraine Palmer’s comment on the Evening league match against Penylan. Nevertheless the rink of Tricia Brinkworth, Belinda Price, Lynda Williams and Captain Lorraine recorded a creditable win, so it was obviously not all “Gloom and Doom “! On the 13th, the two-rink game against Barry Plastics ended in yet another win thanks again to an emphatic performance from Kath Jenkins, well supported by June Williams, Barbara Brown and Viv Duckers.

Last week it was success all the way for the Ladies of Rectory Road with victories over Birchgrove and Murch. The evening League game against Birchgrove saw success on both rinks for Penarth with wins for Belinda Price and pride of place going to Betty Jones, Joyce Allen, Sue Croll, and Lorraine Palmer in a 33-17 victory. The League match against Murch on Thursday produced yet another consummate performance with two rinks up in the 55-41 win. Betty Jones once again claimed top spot with the help of Belinda Price, Kath Jenkins and Lorraine Palmer and there was a good win from Tricia Brinkworth’s four. Keep up the good work ladies.

This week’s poser: Whose rink finished the match at Murch long after the other three rinks had eaten their post- match meal?

There are no prizes for guessing the answer to this one My Mate.
