YOUNGSTERS from a Barry secondary school discovered how to be the hosts with the most when they visited a Cardiff hotel.
Teenagers from Ysgol Bro Morgannwg were given an insight into the hospitality industry as part of National Apprentice Week, thanks to the Cardiff Marriott Hotel.
16 pupils attended an ‘apprentice day’ at the hotel, where they were given an opportunity to take part in various tasks while gaining advice and guidance from the Marriott’s experienced staff.
The year 10 pupils received a front and back of house tour of the hotel and its different departments, had a chance to bake their own Welsh cakes and make alcohol-free cocktails, with one lucky pupil winning a meal for his family at the hotel.
All of the pupils involved are either considering careers as chefs or personal trainers, with many looking to enter the industry after they finish school, possibly via apprenticeships.
Sian Williams, of Bro Morgannwg, said: “The pupils are at an important stage in their education, with many looking to enter the world of work in just more than a year’s time.
“We wanted to show the pupils the opportunities that are available for them if they choose to enter the hospitality industry
Human resources manager for the Cardiff Marriott Hotel, Catherine Jenkins said: “The Marriott apprentice programs are designed to attract, grow and nurture talent through a unique learning experience, fantastic skills training and industry recognised qualification.
“It’s about inspiring our future generation and it was clear to see that the students are very passionate about the possibility of entering the hospitality industry and their enthusiasm was amazing.
“Hospitality offers various career options and by gaining hands on experience these teenagers are putting themselves in a great position to succeed in their chosen career paths in the near future.”
