WORK has started on a £3.2million housing development in St Athan that will offer 23 new homes.

The rural development is being built on a brown field site at Old Station Yard, Gileston Road by contractors Jehu Project Services on behalf of Newydd Housing Association in partnership with Vale of Glamorgan Council and part funded with grant from the Welsh Government.

The development will offer one, two and three bedroom apartments, bungalows and houses for affordable rent. A total of six one-bedroom apartments, two two-bedroom adapted bungalows, 10 two-bedroom houses and five three-bedroom homes will be completed by winter 2015.

As part of the development, £47,000 will be invested in better access for pedestrians, and a public open space and seating area will also be provided for residents living in the area. These affordable homes will also incorporate an automatic fire sprinkler system as part of a pilot project lead by the Welsh Government.

People with an interest in renting these properties can apply by registering with Homes4u, the local housing register managed by the Vale of Glamorgan Council.
