FAMILY and club commitments could make former Newport Gwent Dragons second row Luke Charteris a major doubt for Wales’ summer showdowns with England and New Zealand.

After winning his 66th cap in the victory over Italy last Saturday, the Racing 92 lock revealed that his wife is due to give birth in France around the end of May.

Wales face RBS 6 Nations champions and Grand Slam winners England at Twickenham on May 29 ahead of a three-Test series with the Kiwis.

The 33-year-old could also be involved in the French Top 14 final, which falls on the eve of the third match against the All Blacks on June 24.

“The more important thing is that my wife is due another baby, so that will be my first priority,” said Charteris.

“We’ll see how that goes, hopefully everything goes well there and then I can make a decision after that.”

Having agreed to join Bath for next season, Charteris will be hoping to finish his time at Racing 92 on a high, and the French outfit, currently second in the Top 14, are expected to challenge for the title this season.

When questioned about his availability for Wales’ summer fixtures, he added: “I don't know, I’ll cross that bridge when we get there.

“I want to be doing as well as we can with Racing and put ourselves in a position to win some silverware, and see what happens down the line.

“The honest answer is I’m not really sure.”

Looking forward to the end of the campaign, Charteris, brought back into the side for the Italy game due to Alun Wyn Jones’ injury, continued: “It’s a big end of the season for a lot of boys who were in the World Cup, so it’s been a long year.

“We’ll go back to our clubs now, some will have a bit of rest, some have got big games coming up.

“We look forward to getting back together in a few months’ time and it’s a great way to finish the season off.”

Racing 92, minus a number of their big names, ceded first place in the Top 14 to Clermont Auvergne at the weekend as they were demolished 60-7 by Montpellier.
