WALES know they will have a point to prove against Italy after a largely abject display at Twickenham on Saturday, says hooker Scott Baldwin.

Late tries from George North and Taulupe Faletau saw Wales come close to snatching one of the great Test match victories having trailed 25-7 with seven minutes left.

However, that remarkable finish aside, Warren Gatland’s troops were a clear second best on the day, missing far too many tackles and allowing England to build a lead which proved vital in the end.

The Italians are in Cardiff next Saturday and, although Wales cannot claim the Six Nations championship, Baldwin insists they have to finish the tournament on a high in front of their own fans.

“The good thing about this group is that we are honest,” he said. “We will learn from this.

“I won’t have any bones about being told what I did wrong.

“We need to be a lot better defensively because Italy have some real threats out wide.

“We want to out on a real show next week. We will go out to win but now we have a point to prove.

“That’s something we will take on board and if there is pressure from outside and from the coaches then we will react to that.”

Baldwin accepted Wales “weren’t at the races” in the first half and gave themselves far too much to do in the second period.

But he also had one or two things to say about the officiating of the scrum.

“We had three penalties at scrum time for Dan Cole coming across and then they get the put in and he does the same thing but England get the penalty,” he added.

“We just need consistency for what we are doing, otherwise we are just left scratching our heads.

“We had some feedback from last week with some decisions that should have gone our way but didn’t.

“We go into this game with the same mentality but we get one decision for something and then get penalised for the same thing at the next scrum. We just need consistency.”

Baldwin also held his hands up for missing a tackle on England lock Maro Itoje in the build up to Anthony Watson’s first-half try.
