WALES boss Warren Gatland believes Newport Gwent Dragons novices Tyler Morgan and Hallam Amos will reap the rewards from a taste of being under the Test match spotlight despite a challenging afternoon against the Irish.

The hosts were comprehensively outplayed by the Six Nations champions in the World Cup warm-up at a sold-out Millennium Stadium.

The Irish ran in five tries in a 35-21 success with Wales flattered by the scoreline thanks to late scores by Justin Tipuric and Alex Cuthbert.

Centre Morgan, 19, grew into the game on his international debut while 20-year-old Amos showed signs of his talent when ending a two-year wait to add to the cap he won against Tonga.

The pair, who are on national dual contracts, played huge roles in Tipuric’s super score and should survive the first cut to Gatland’s squad after next week’s Colwyn Bay training camp.

The duo are not blessed with big match experience and their coach believes they will settle down after their encounter with the Irish.

“It was a bit hard for Tyler in his first game and he will learn a huge amount from the experience,” said Gatland.

“It’s a first one under the belt and he was a little bit unlucky with a few offloads while he didn’t get a lot of touches.

“For these young boys it’s often hard in their first occasion out there – I remember Jonathan Davies against Australia being like a rabbit in the headlights.

“Tyler will learn from the experience, and Hallam as well. I shifted Hallam to the right wing (in the final quarter) and I thought he did a pretty good job.”

Gatland, meanwhile, praised the third Dragon on the field after Taulupe Faletau came off the bench at number eight in the second half.

“I thought Toby Faletau was outstanding with some nice carries and good footwork,” he said.
