WARREN Gatland expressed his delight that his Wales charges grasped their shot at redemption with victory in Scotland.

Wales kept alive their Six Nations title hopes by winning 26-23 at Murrayfield thanks to tries by scrum-half Rhys Webb and centre Jonathan Davies, 16 points from the boot of Leigh Halfpenny and some spirited defence.

While there is still room for improvement in the clash with France in Paris a week on Sunday, it was a strong response to the Millennium Stadium defeat to England on opening night.

“I’m a great believer in giving players another chance,” said Gatland. “We knew how difficult it was going to be to come here and I think the players were on edge today, which was positive.

“We had read some quotes in the newspapers saying we were coming up here and expecting to win and just treating it as another day at the office. In terms of the way we prepared for this game and the respect that we have for Scotland, that did us a lot of good.

“We didn’t expect a walk in the park, we knew how tough it was going to be. With the emotion we had in the changing room beforehand, we knew it meant a lot to the players to get a performance and a result.

“With you guys (the media), there’s very little middle ground. The team that wins gets the praise and the team that loses gets absolutely criticised.

“What makes this championship so exciting is the ability for any team to beat each other.”

Wales were forced to hold firm in the face of a late Scottish charge and Gatland wants his side to be more clinical at the Stade de France.

“We went out and played more rugby than last week and the possession and territory were pretty favourable,” said the New Zealander.

“The disappointing thing was we had chances to put the game to bed and we allowed Scotland back into the game. We were relieved more than anything with the win and get the campaign back on track.

“I thought the big thing was that we dominated the kicking and the aerial display was outstanding, we got a lot of rewards from that.

“It was about learning from last week because against England we got dragged into a game we didn’t want to play.”
