WALES head coach Warren Gatland has opted to delay the announcement of his team to face South Africa while he waits on several injured players.

Scarlets prop Rob Evans has been called up to train with Wales this week as Gatland's side prepare for Saturday's meeting with the Springboks.

Injuries to Nicky Smith, George North, Rhys Webb and Leigh Halfpenny will be assessed before the team, originally due to announced on Tuesday, will be revealed on Thursday morning.

Wales attack coach Rob Howley spoke to the media at a press conference on Monday.

“Nicky Smith, obviously, has got a pec injury,” said Howley.

“We are awaiting results of a scan. Gethin Jenkins will be integrated into rugby training tomorrow and Rob (Evans) has been called up from the Scarlets for training today and tomorrow.

“Monday is that sort of day in terms of x-rays, scans and treatment and trying to assess where our players are at.

“Also, George North will hopefully start his concussion protocal either today or tomorrow.

“Rhys Webb came off with a groin strain, and he is being assessed as we speak and will hopefully be available for the weekend.

“Leigh has taken a little bit of a bump to his shoulder. He is being assessed, but we are hopeful that he will be able to start training tomorrow. It is not major at this moment in time.”

On Evans, Howley added: “In terms of what we have always gone back to is a succession plan that has been in place since 2009 which shows the next four or five players in those positions, and the monitoring through watching and analysis.”
