TOTTENHAM defender Ben Davies insists Wales are confident it’s just a matter of time before they qualify for the European Championships in France, writes Michael Pearlman.

The left-back filled in as a central defender as Wales accrued four points from potential banana skin fixtures against Cyprus and Israel, leaving them on the brink of qualification.

“We are confident it is only a matter of time, it would have been a nice climax to do it at home against Israel, but it is down to us now to get that point we need,” Davies told the South Wales Argus.

“Playing two games in four days is difficult, but we are fit and professional and perhaps we just lacked that little bit of creativity we needed against an Israel side that dropped in and made it difficult for us, that’s always going to be hard.”

Davies was delighted, however, with the Welsh defending though he admits the players felt the referee might have given them more.

“As defenders it’s great to keep another clean sheet (Wales’ fifth on the spin) as defenders that’s our job, to keep things tight and let the boys up top try and get that goal, but we are happy as defenders, it’s good for us to keep another clean sheet,” he said.

“The referee might have been tougher on them for time wasting, he could perhaps have booked a couple of players earlier, but they were coming for a draw, they are just doing their job.

“I thought it was a penalty, granted I was 50-yards away, but any chance for a penalty, I would have grabbed it!”
