Barry need bonus-point win for automatic promotion

BARRY RFC 55 ST ALBANS 0

BARRY entertained St Albans in their penultimate league game of the season on Wednesday, last week, knowing it was vital to gain a bonus point victory to maintain their title challenge.

With Barry defending their 100 per cent home record, the opposition saw the chance of taking a scalp and early decisions by the referee to penalise Barry unsettled the team, allowing the visitors the opportunity to take the lead.

However, a simple penalty was missed.

The game soon settled down and home pressure forced a penalty which Chris Cummings duly despatched.

Barry continued to move the ball at every opportunity, and on 30 minutes Tom Lee scored a fine try wide out, Cummings missing the conversion.

What followed was perceived by the majority of the crowd to be one of the finest tries of the season, as quick ball and hands gave Danny Ryan a chance from 40 yards out, and his speed and skill left the visiting defence floundering, giving Barry a 15 point lead.

The second half began where the first ended, the home team in charge up front and Rhys Hardy controlling the game from outside-half, getting the threequarters moving at every opportunity.

With St Albans reduced to 14 men after a sin bin, Barry began to control all aspects of the game, and tries from George and Hardy gave Barry the required bonus point.

Barry were relishing the amount of ball the forwards were providing, and though St Albans were forced into passive scrums after an injury, they were not deterred, as Provis' crossfield run yielded another try, closely followed by Cummings who broke from 40 yards to score.

With the game won, Barry made changes, amongst them the evergreen Dai Griffiths, who as you would expect made an immediate impact - the rest is history!

Provis produced another score before Hardy finished the game in style with Barry's fifth try, final score 55-0.

Barry's final league game of the season is this Saturday (May 15) at third-placed Blackwood All Stars, and to guarantee automatic promotion Barry need to win with a bonus point.

All supporters are welcome, with a coach leaving the club at 1pm in addition to the team bus, which will be leaving at 12.30pm - good luck boys!
