Barry RFC lose unbeaten record - but bounce straight back with a win

BARRY RFC lost their unbeaten record to Senghenydd on Wednesday of last week, but returned to winning ways on Saturday with victory over St Albans.

ST ALBANS 10 BARRY 67

ON a perfect day for running rugby, Barry visited Cardiff on Saturday to play against a side forced to opt for uncontested scrums.

The consolation is that they are getting used to playing this version of the game!

Barry were soon on the attack and after only two minutes, Walsh crossed for a try – but it was the last of the action for him as he injured himself in the process and was substituted.

Within the first 20 minutes the referee had awarded the home side nine penalties, and none to the visitors. This official later penalised one St Albans player four times for high tackling but did not reach for even a yellow card.

However, Barry went further ahead after 25 minutes with a converted try from Evans.

Haskell and George were prominent at this time, but there was a worrying ankle injury to O Brown, which led to his substitution.

A third try was scored by O’Sullivan as a reward for good back play whilst the fourth and bonus point try was secured via a try for Ryan after support work from the pack.

Following a yellow card for the home side, their defence was opened up for Cummings to do the honours. The half time score stood at 31-5 to Barry.

With St Albans starting a man short, the second half became something of a procession.

Given the deluge of tries during this period, it may be churlish to record that the visitors were guilty of inaccurate kicking out of hand and of lacking composure at times.

The try tally rose to 11 with well-engineered scores from Evans, Hadfield, Cummings (2) and Provis (2). The Barry show is definitely back on the road.

Barry were due to play away to Canton on Wednesday (April 14), and next comes a home game against Cilfynydd on Saturday afternoon (April 17).

SENGHENYDD 13 BARRY 12

BARRY travelled to Senghenydd last Wednesday evening to fulfil a postponed fixture against a team only one place behind them at the head of the division.

With the Barry side high on confidence and buoyed by a successful cup run, it was going to be a turgid close-run thing – and so it proved.

Barry were soon behind to a penalty goal and following good driving play by their forwards, the home side extended their lead with a well taken converted try.

The referee did the visitors no favours with the penalty count standing 5-0 against them after only 20 minutes.

Barry gradually obtained parity up front without ever looking convincing at the set scrums. The visitors were rewarded for these efforts with two well-taken penalties by Lee, leaving the score 6-10 at half time.

Whilst the score line was encouraging, the injuries to Williams and H.Jones may prove to be more costly with the fixtures piling up as the season draws to a close.

Barry started the second half in attack mode with some strong running in the backs creating the chance for Lee to close the gap to a single point. This player was also using his strong left foot to gain large chunks of territory.

After 20 minutes Barry struck the front with another penalty but this was soon nullified when Evans at centre was harshly yellow carded for a putative illegal tackle.

Try as they might, the visitors could not break down a dogged home defence and the game meandered to a disappointing loss of an unbeaten record.

The result may have been disappointing – but not one player could be criticised for lack of effort.
