CILFYNYDD 7 BARRY RFC 32
BARRY returned to league action at Cilfynydd after another two week international break which never appears to do the players any favours.
The first scrum showed that Barry would dominate that phase of the game as Cilfynydd were pushed backwards, and from the resulting maul conceded a penalty that was duly kicked by Chris Cummings.
However, for some reason Barry kicked away their possession, not always effectively, and it was left to the forwards to gain 30 driving yards, forcing Cilfynydd to concede a further penalty, again kicked by Cummings.
Virtually from the restart good lineout ball by King was moved out and quick recycling saw Provis cross for the first try, again converted by Cummings.
Still kicking rather aimlessly, Barry allowed Cilfynydd to begin to exert some pressure and stout defending for a 5 minute period was needed.
A fine steal by Hollister put Barry back on the attack, but unfortunately a knock-on was called. This appeared to wake up the forwards who with their tight play dominance drove 40 yards to the line for hooker Rhys Sullivan to score the second try, again converted by Cummings.
Cilfynydd had by now taken the decision to opt for lineouts rather than scrums whenever possible.
Short of half time Hywel Jones broke from half way only to be called back for a foot in touch, and the second half began with some lapses of concentration with unforced errors starting to creep in.
It took a smart break by George to finally get the threequarters moving and quick passing gave the opportunity for Walsh to side step his way over for a good try. The conversion was successful.
By now Cilfynydd had somehow managed parity in the scrums and began to retain possession to put Barry under pressure. This paid off when their clever centre waltzed through the non-existent Barry defence to score.
Barry were playing in fits and starts - perhaps it is the bonus point syndrome - and needed to calm the game down.
A good break from the back by Ryan saw him link up with Ben Gill, on for Glyn Jones, only for a forward pass to be called, not for the first time.
Two or three attacks broke down but finally Barry won a penalty short of the line only to lose the lineout. Another attack involving Walsh and Wheeler came to nothing. Small errors came aplenty - losing a scrum, wild passes and lapses of discipline.
Barry made substitutions, bringing on Hadfield, Myers and Evans for the last 10 minutes.
The elusive fourth try and bonus point came when a quick penalty ended up short of the line for Provis to pick up and dive over in the corner. The conversion was missed.
This Saturday Barry face Deri at the Reservoir Field, kick-off at 2.30pm.
