Barry Town get back to winning ways!

Barry Town 3 BRYNTIRION ATHLETIC 2

AFTER two poor results in recent weeks, manager Gavin Chesterfield once again shuffled his limited squad around.

He must have been very frustrated as he watched his team create numerous chances yet fail to take any of them in those other games.

Winger James Dixon started this game as an out-and-out striker joining Sam Small as a twin strike force, and Kirk Huggins started for the first time after his long term injury.

With other positional changes the strategy seemed to be working as, for the first ten minutes, the home side dominated the play – though again the scoring chances they created were spurned.

Then with their first serious foray into the Dragons half, the visitors scored against the run of play.

Dan Bradley in the Barry goal pulled off a fantastic point-blank save but then saw his effort come to nought as unluckily for him, Bryn striker Anthony Rawlings, almost on the goal line, drove the ball into the net.

This really knocked the players’ confidence as with the side struggling to score, the loss of a goal meant an uphill struggle.

The next half hour saw the Dragons once again on the back foot with passes continually going astray, leaving the opposition to find acres of room in which to work – although they were unable to take any advantage from this due to some strong defending from the back four.

The Dragons equalised in the 38th minute following one of the finest footballing moments seen at Jenner Park this season, and strangely alien in the context of what went on before.

Several short and accurate passes involving four or five Barry Town players led to striker James Simpson firing home an absolutely stunning goal.

With fans now getting excited and the famed Barry choir in the players' ears, the confidence started to come back, and it was no surprise when three minutes later they scored again.

Striker Sam Small fired a sweet strike into the far right hand corner of the net, leaving the visiting keeper looking on in despair.

The half time whistle came with Barry Town completely on top.

The second half began with the Town on the front foot and playing some nice football, but again the opposition scored against the run of play.

The goal came from a set piece with a well-taken flighted ball into the box which saw Bryn defender Sean Williams climb above the home defence to score with a superb header into the far corner of the goal, again leaving the Town keeper with no chance.

The goal could have really knocked the players' confidence, but showing the character that we have come to expect from them they immediately went on the attack, searching for a winner.

It eventually came in the 75th minute when some individual brilliance from James Dixon saw him use his skill and pace to get through the Bryntirion defence and hit a fine low drive into the net.

It really was a strange sort of game – a mixture of nervousness and flashes of brilliance – with two fine young goalkeepers each keeping their side in it when needed with some excellent work.

The game finished 3-2 to Barry Town. Overall they were worth the points and hopefully they will take this confidence into building another unbeaten run.

Next up are West End, away this Saturday.
