MIDFIELDERS Aaron Ramsey and Jonny Williams will miss Wales’ opening 2018 World Cup qualifier against Moldova due to injury.

David Vaughan is also missing from Chris Coleman’s squad for the match at Cardiff City Stadium on Monday, September 5, having announced his retirement from international football.

Vaughan was Wales' longest-serving player after making his international debut in a 2-0 away defeat to the United States in May 2003.

The 33-year-old was in the Wales squad that reached the Euro 2016 semi-finals this summer, but he remained an unused substitute throughout the campaign.

Real Madrid star Gareth Bale is in the squad and Newport-born defenders James Collins and Chris Gunter retain their places.

West Ham United centre-back Collins will hope to win his 50th cap against Moldova, while Reading full-back Gunter is in line to make a 74th appearance for his country.

Newcastle defender Paul Dummett, Cardiff midfielder Emyr Huws and Leicester striker Tom Lawrence have been drafted in.

Coleman said he expected Ramsey to be out for another three weeks with a hamstring injury picked up in Arsenal's opening Premier League match against Liverpool on August 14.

"When you've got a player as good as Aaron, take him out of any team and you are going to know about it," said the national manager.

"He is irreplaceable, he makes a huge impact for us. He is a great player and it's a shame he's not here. He's a loss to any team."

Williams is expected to be out for a couple of months after suffering an ankle injury in a Crystal Palace pre-season friendly.

"Jonny has had a good impact on the team and brings something different," added Coleman.

"I saw that tackle on him, it was a coward's tackle from behind, and that was annoying.

"Vaughny sat down with me when he got back from France and explained he was going to retire.

"I tried to talk him out of because he's been with us for so long and he's got good quality.

"But he wants to spend more time with his family and concentrate on his club career, and we've got to respect that.

"He's been a great servant for Wales."
